Barnett Newman was one of the most sane artists among the Abstract Expressionist artists, and his art was full of mystery and unknowability. Newman’s paintings are painted with powerful monochrome, absolutely flat colors on huge pictures, with rows of lines in the middle passing vertically or horizontally through the picture. Some draw only one or two vertical lines on the flat base, and the isolated lines on this picture are nicknamed “zippers”.
People may not understand the meaning of Newman’s work, but when he was alive, he said: “What I paint is different from yours, it doesn’t matter if you don’t understand, I am me!” Perhaps because of his strong conviction, his works have been a great success.
